Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Hair restoration is an umbrella term for a variety of different approaches to hair loss, including medications, topical solutions, and hair growth treatments designed to stop or reverse hair loss and promote healthy hair. We offer several hair restoration treatments at Eternal Dermatology and Aesthetics in Fulton, MD. We create a unique hair loss treatment plan for each patient, including those who want to use an effective topical product like minoxidil to promote hair growth in their treatment areas.

Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Minoxidil has been around for well over 50 years and was originally used to treat medical symptoms and conditions, including high blood pressure and the occurrence of ulcers. However, experts discovered that minoxidil can do more than just treat certain medical conditions: it also promotes hair growth.

Some patients respond best to topical hair growth solutions, and for that reason, we offer minoxidil as a hair loss treatment. This topical solution can help you see increased hair growth within several weeks of beginning using the treatment and is an effective way to reverse hair loss and promote hair restoration.

Minoxidil: An Effective Hair Loss Treatment

Minoxidil can treat different areas on the scalp to promote hair growth, including thinning hair and areas that have experienced full or partial balding or a receding hairline. The first step in determining whether minoxidil for hair restoration is right for you is by scheduling an initial consultation. Some patients are better suited for multiple hair restoration treatments and can benefit from a treatment plan that includes a topical product like minoxidil and other options.

Once we confirm that you are a good candidate for minoxidil, we can create your treatment plan. We will provide you with more details about the product, how it works, how you must apply it, and what you can expect in terms of your results.

What It Treats

Minoxidil for hair loss and hair restoration is an effective solution for those suffering from different types of hair loss, including a receding hairline, pattern baldness, CCCA, telogen effluvium, and other hair thinning or hair loss conditions. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other treatments in a hair loss treatment plan.

How It Works

Minoxidil is a topical solution that works by forcing hair follicles to enter a growth phase. It typically comes in a foam form and is directly applied onto the scalp in areas where you want to see hair restoration and combat or reverse hair loss.

The Application Process

Before applying the solution to the skin, you must ensure that the scalp is clean and dry. Your hair can be damp, but you want to ensure that the scalp is dry. You’ll administer the topical solution as directed and allow it to dry before using any other products.

This treatment is designed for the scalp only, not other areas of the body. You may need to apply the product once or twice daily, based on your needs. We can give you directions regarding how often and how much product to apply to your treatment area to achieve your results. Always wash your hands after administering the product.

A Note About Shedding

It’s important to note that once you begin using this topical solution, you may experience initial shedding, which is completely normal and typically happens within the first two to four weeks of beginning product use. Shedding is not a bad sign, contrary to popular opinion. It is a sign that the treatment is working and forcing hair follicles in your treatment area to return to the active growth phase.

What Kind of Results To Expect

It can take up to four to six months to see visible improvements in your treatment area. It’s important to note that continued treatment is necessary for continued hair growth. Once you discontinue use, your treatment area will return to its pre-treatment state after a few months.

Am I a Candidate?

If you are interested in beginning a treatment plan with minoxidil as your primary hair loss treatment, we can evaluate your desired treatment area to determine if it’s right for you. Some patients may not qualify for minoxidil for safety reasons, including pregnant and nursing women, children, individuals under the age of 18, and those who would better benefit from one of our other treatment options.

Other Hair Restoration Treatments

Depending on the type of hair condition you want to treat, you may benefit from additional treatments that we offer here at Eternal Dermatology and Aesthetics. We offer hair transplant through follicular unit transplantation, a treatment that does not require invasive measures to promote hair restoration. We also offer platelet-rich plasma treatments that can stimulate hair growth by using PRP from your blood.

The Kerafuse Scalp Treatment is another treatment that can help treat different hair and scalp conditions, including alopecia. This treatment is designed to promote scalp health, increase blood flow, and unclog pores on the scalp to help the patient regrow hair in the treatment area. PRP injections, oral medications, topical scalp solutions, and ointments can also help promote hair growth. Laser light therapy techniques have also been successful treatments that have allowed patients to experience restored hair growth.
