What are cysts?
Cysts are closed, thin-walled sacs filled with fluid or semi-fluid material located within the body. There are three main types of benign (non-cancerous) cysts:
Epidermal cysts are found on the face, neck, back, or anywhere on the body and are freely movable. They contain a cheese-like substance made from broken-down keratin.
Trichilemmal cysts (wens)
Trichilemmal cysts appear most often on the scalp and sometimes show up in groups. They appear similar to epidermal cysts but are more firm in texture.
Milia are small, firm, whitish lesions found on the face and around the eyes. Milia are often seen on infants and don’t typically require treatment, though adults may want milia removed for cosmetic reasons.
What are lipomas?
Lipomas are common fatty lumps located underneath the skin and over the underlying muscle. They can appear anywhere on the body and feel soft and doughy to the touch. Lipomas are most often found in men and women from the ages of 40-60, but can be seen in any age group.
Generally, they cause no symptoms. However, if lipomas grow large enough, they may cause pain by pressing on surrounding nerves or blood vessels.
How do cysts and lipomas form?
Cysts and lipomas have many different causes, including:
- Clogged hair follicles
- Penetrating injuries
- Various skin conditions, such as acne and folliculitis
- Genetic factors
Dr. Rodney can determine the type of lump you have — whether a cyst or lipoma — and provide treatment options.
How are cysts and lipomas diagnosed?
To determine the cause of your lump, Dr. Rodney begins with a physical exam. She presses on the lump to feel its texture, measures its size, and checks whether it can be moved underneath your skin or not.
If necessary, Dr. Rodney removes a small sample of the lump for testing. As a precaution, she may also inspect your skin and the tissue sample for potential signs of skin cancer.
How are cysts and lipomas treated?
Many small cysts and lipomas do not require treatment. However, they can be removed if they are large, infected, painful, or for cosmetic reasons. Removal is typically performed surgically using a local anesthetic and a small scalpel to remove the cyst or lipoma from your skin. This procedure is performed in Dr. Rodney’s office, and may take about 30 minutes.
Suspicious lumps in your skin may signal cysts and lipomas or more serious concerns — like skin cancer. Call or click to schedule an appointment online today for evaluation and treatment at Eternal Dermatology.
