IPL Skin Rejuvenation Columbia MD

What Is IPL Skin Rejuvenation?

Lasers and light devices, like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) are the most exciting advances in cosmetic treatments. IPL skin rejuvenation (or photofacial) is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of light to improve pigment issue  such as freckles, age spots, redness, rosacea, sun damage and spider veins. It can be performed just about anywhere on the body, including the face, chest, neck, back, shoulders, arms or legs.

How Does IPL Work?

The light penetrates the skin with a series of pulses, which is then converted into heat energy. The heat energy destroys the brown discolored cells without affecting the nearby healthy skin. The blood within blood vessels also absorbs the heat energy, and seals the blood vessels shut. Benefits of IPL skin rejuvenation include:

  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Little to no downtime
  • Greatly reduces spider veins, redness and flushing
  • Dramatic restoration of sun-damaged and discolored skin
  • Stimulates collagen, decrease in fine lines and wrinkles

What Happens Before, During and After the Procedure?

Before

On the day of your IPL skin rejuvenation, your skin should be tan-free, whether from the sun, lotion, spray or a tanning bed. Any tan will hinder the detection of the blemishes you want removed.

During

We glide the IPL handpiece across your skin while delivering brief pulses of light. You will feel a warm sensation. The number of pulses will depend on the size of the area being treated. Also depending on the size of the treated area, it can take from a few minutes or as much as an hour.

After

The downtime for IPL is often a few hours in which the treated area may feel red, warm or slightly irritated. You may resume your normal activities right away. In the following days, the brown areas may get a little darker. This will disappear in a few days. Topical medications may cause additional irritation. So, you can resume these after 2 days have passed. Be extra cautious about sun exposure for the following month.

What are the Risks of IPL?

IPL is ideal for patients with light skin who tend to get sun damage and freckles. Risks of the procedure include burning and discoloration of the skin. Because the brown color in the skin is the target of the IPL treatment, these risks are greater in darker skin types. Therefore, a consultation can determine if IPL skin rejuvenation is right for you.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Multiple treatments are usually needed for maximum results. While you will see improvement after the first treatment, an average treatment plan is between 3-4 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart.
